Katie Biss Garden Raider

Thank you to those who caught the “Lara Croft Tomb Raider” reference that is my post title!  Yes I am a proud nerd ;)

Last night, Jeff’s Uncle John and Aunty Cec invited us to their home to raid their garden (OK I raided while Jeff talked computer business with Uncle John).  Thank you Uncle John and Aunty Cec!  You spoil us!

When I walked into their backyard and saw THIS I was doing the Elaine Dance inside!

Lettuce! Carrots! Beets! Cucumbers! Green and Purple Beans! Parsnips! Green Onions! Tomatoes!  I was taken back at the beauty that is their garden.

The whole time I was there all I could imagine was:

“Jeff I need some carrots.”

“OK I’ll just step outside into our amazing backyard and pick a few…Do you want a cucumber too Gumba head?”  (Yes Jeff calls me Gumba head and yes I answer to it…)

Here’s the thing.

I don’t garden.  I’ve never gardened.  I don’t know the difference between a weed and an actual plant.  Flowers take one look at me and shrivel.  We’ve discussed this already…Which by the way, remember that potting plant that someone sent me at work?  Dead in 3 weeks.  I predicted 1 week so that is a victory in my books…But I killed it nonetheless.

As you know, we’ve built flower and garden boxes recently and I have every intention in the world of conquering my gardening fears in hopes of harvesting beautiful vegetables and herbs next year.

Being able to experience the gardening environment last night really just sealed the deal for me.  I am going to have a “big girl” garden and it is going to kick bum cheeks.  It may be an epic failure for the first few years but it will be mine…Oh yes, it will be mine.  (Thank you Wayne’s World)

Here’s my loot!

I only wanted to pick enough for today and tomorrow as we are heading out to the cottage again on Friday and I already had some veg that needed to be eaten.  Jeff has already called dibbs on the carrots…Jeff calling dibbs on a vegetable?  Suffice to say he received no arguments from me ;)

And here’s me making out with my veg.

What…that’s not normal?

Apparently I do that a lot with produce ;)    Remember the mango love incident?

I started my day with a VERY slow 5km run.  For whatever reason I just couldn’t seem to kick it into high gear so I just pressed on in turtle mode.

Breakfast today was enjoyed immensely.  So much in fact that I almost got my head stuck in the glass trying to lick the sides…Don’t picture that…That image will burn your retinas.

In this glass is some optimum slim, blubes, strawbes and banana!  It is pretty neat how switching up meals for even just a day makes a meal that generally makes a regular appearance in your life seem new and exciting!

Fun fact!!! Jeff has a martini cereal glass and so do I.  We use them on the same day and make sure to “clink” our glasses before we eat breakfast.  If you weren’t 100% sure if we were nerds, well, I think I’ve confirmed that for you just now ;)   I’m glad to be of service!

Lunch today was some thawed chunky monkey crockpot chili from a few weeks ago!  Holy swear words batman!  Yum!

On the side were green and purple fresh garden beans (which oddly enough reminded me of the wicked witch from The Wizard of Oz because of the color combo), carrots and cherries!!

I need to make some muffins or a loaf of some sort!  A raisin bran muffin would have completed this lunch on every level.  Maybe tonight…We shall see!

Well I hear a Mexican inspired fried egg sandwich calling my name for supper!  You saw me eat one of these on Tuesday…My favorite part of the sammich is the natural creamy and buttery flavour of the yolk when it breaks!

Tonight I have an unofficial Zumba class!  Last week was our last class but our teacher has invited us to workout with her and in return we can be her “guinea pigs” for new songs and moves!  I am SO in!

What is your favorite FRESH OUT OF THE GARDEN vegetable??

The tomato! Hands down is my favorite right out of the garden! Cucumbers are a close second though :)
